ENGLISH
The Reception Class learns English in three sections: Speaking and listening (show and tell, drama, and music and movement), reading (phonics and word bank building) and writing. The children work in small, flexible groups on a variety of reading-based activities appropriate to their level of understanding.
As they progress into Year I the children learn: writing composition; different genres of fiction and non-fiction; cursive handwriting, guided and shared reading and spelling. Drama and show and tell are an important part of confidence building. In the Upper School the children build on these skills and by the time that they reach Year 6, the children have a very advanced level of communication as the examples displayed around the school clearly show. We aim to give them experience of writing in many different forms. Written communication is backed up by enhanced verbal communication skills, with speech and drama training to develop speech and confident communication. This ultimately leads to the English Speaking Board Examinations for many of the children and builds up confidence immensely.
MATHEMATICS
Our aim is to make mathematics enjoyable and fun for the Reception Class. In the first years we cover all the basics of the four rules, numerals, place value, measuring, shape, time, money, and data handling. In the Upper School these concepts are expanded upon and new topics taught to ensure that the children are as confident in numerical communication as in verbal. By the time they reach Year 6 the pupils are fully prepared for the Common Entrance examinations and conversant with all aspects of Maths required for the competitive London entry requirements.
