HUMANITIES
History is taught in chronological order from the Ancient Egyptians, through the Romans and Aztecs, then onto the Vikings. In later British history we cover Victorian England, Britain since 1930 and World War II. However, there are many chances to enjoy local history - the history of Chelsea for example - and the younger children benefit from a hands-on introduction to the subject with topics such as "Old and New Toys" and "Seaside Holidays of the Past."
The new Reception children enjoy local visits to help them learn about the community, the first building block topic of geography. Later on they move onto and study the Atlas and different geographical features both at home and abroad. By Year 6 the children are fully conversant with the continents and have absorbed relevant country by country data on geographical features, cities and rivers, trade and exports. Dealing with complex map work will be routine and children will be advised to check the news regularly for interesting geographical developments to discuss in class.
FRENCH AND LATIN
French has always been taught from Reception at Cameron House. In addition the three French clubs take place during the week. Native French speakers report that they particularly enjoy getting together for advanced conversation, reading children's French novels and enjoying other learning activities appropriate to their fluency.
Latin is taught in Year Six and a flourishing lunchtme club exists for the very able younger children.
