The Insider
Autumn Term 2008
Dear Parents,
This week Class 3 enjoyed a special visit on Monday afternoon when we welcomed two ladies from The Tea Board to school. They talked about sharing stories at tea time and the children all enjoyed a cup of tea and a magical story! On Wednesday Class 1 enjoyed a wonderful sunny visit to London Zoo. They went on an African Mini Safari, spotting Red River Hogs, Okapi, Zebras, African Hunting Dogs and Giraffes. They also spotted a few other African animals around the Zoo, like Meerkats and Flamingos. The children had to look closely at the different colours and patterns on the animals.
Class 6 experienced a brilliant workshop in school on Wednesday morning when Christina Dawson from Action Aid came into Class 6 to lead a Rainforest Workshop. The children were shown original artefacts and learnt about rainforests as an ecosystem as well as a place to live for tribal people. They were even able to taste some tropical fruits – yummy! This morning Class 4 performed a superb assembly for their parents all about the environment and recycling and shared some of their stunning Earth Art creations with us (see below!). I am delighted to attach the Upper School Newsletter with this week’s Insider which includes just some of the wonderful work they have already produced this term. Well done!

Thank you to everybody for getting 'denimised' last Friday! By wearing our jeans, giving a pound or more, we helped raise an amazing £157, which will go to various charities and support thousands of children affected by genetic disorders. If you would like to find out more about this worthy charity please visit: www.jeansforgenes.com.
As there has been less interest this term for the Upper School Thursday lunchtime Computer Club, we would like to offer an alternative club; recently many parents and children have shown great interest in the idea of a Touch Typing club. After half term we will therefore be offering a Touch Typing Club every Thursday (12.30-1pm), for children in Class 3-6. The aim of the club is to teach children the skill of touch typing through a specially designed program in a fun and enjoyable way. If you would like you child to sign up for this exciting new club then please contact Lucy in the School Office. The Club will be run by Katerina Lazaridou our ICT specialist teacher.
Last Thursday, the 1st of October, the Class 4 children created amazing ephemeral installations using natural materials in Paulton's Square. They enjoyed using leaves, stones and acorns to create beautiful works of art in the style of famous artists Andy Goldsworthy, Martin Hill and Richard Long. They all enjoyed their "outdoor lesson" with Nicki and Alisa!
We are pleased to inform you that in preparation for our up-coming parents’ evenings, there will soon be appointment sheets on the classroom doors for you to sign up for a convenient time starting at 5.30pm. Parents will have a choice of dates to come to discuss their child’s progress with the Class Teacher (please see dates below). Please sign up for one of these days. We hope you will be able to find a suitable time on the given evenings, but If you are unable to attend either date, please let us know and we will try to find an alternative time for you. Please liaise with Class teachers if you have any “sibling clashes” and they will help arrange convenient times for you.
- Wednesday 29th October or 12th November (5.30-7.00pm) for all Classes
On Thursday 2nd October the Class 4 girls had a netball match against Falkner House School at Battersea Park. All the Class 4 girls were very excited because this was our first netball match ever! According to our coach Stephanie, she thought that we played very well even though it was 3-0 to Falkner House. We weren't very surprised that Falkner House won since they do a lot of netball practice and have a very strong team. We were surprised and delighted however, that Julia's mum came jogging along with her dog to support us. I'm sure that she saw how well Julia was captaining the side and how much progress we have all made.
On Tuesday 7th October Class 3 played Knightsbridge School. We won 4-0 and Maxim scored 1 and I scored 3 goals. Maxim scored a good goal from a set up by Milo. My best goal was from a tight angle which was set up for me by a brilliant pass from Milan. Darius and Dmitry were excellent in defence and Freddie was good in goal. Milan was good at setting up goals.

On Tuesday 7th October Class 3 and Class 4 boys went to Burton's Court for football matches v Knightsbridge School. We won 4-0! I scored 1 goal and Paul got a hat-trick. It was our first win this season. I must say Knightsbridge were good but we were better. Near to the end of the match it started to rain but I don't think it influenced the game. Ann and Hugh were with the Class 3 and 4 boys. They were very proud of us. I am looking forward to our next match after Half term against Redcliffe which hopefully we shall win too!

We went to Burton's Court for our football match and we won 8-0 against Knightsbridge School. Gianluca and Lorenzo scored an amazing hat-trick each. Finlay scored a great goal too and our final goal was scored by Carson who also played well in goal for the first half. With Gianluca scoring in the first few seconds we knew we were going to win the game. Well played all those involved in the team!

Veronica Luccioni (Marina Class 6) very kindly gave up some of her time recently to come into the Class 6 Art lesson to talk to the children about capturing movement using a camera. The children learnt about aperture size and shutter speed before being allowed to experiment themselves. We are extremely grateful to Veronica for sharing her skills and time and the results can be seen on our new display board outside the Reception Class.
A brief reminder that we will be celebrating our Book Week from Monday 13th to Friday 17th October. During this week, the children will be discovering, exploring and immersing themselves in the wonderful world of books, concluding with our school dressing up day on Friday 17th October. On Wednesday 15th October, the children will be taking part in an author workshop conducted by author’s Robin Capstick, who has written a poetry book aimed at older children called, “There’s a Sheep in my Window” and Jill Graham who has written a collection of short stories called “Nantucket Luck”. We will have a table set up in the school entrance hall between 8.30am to 9.00am on Wednesday 15th, for parents who would like to support these authors by purchasing signed copies of their books. Both Robin and Jill will kindly be donating part proceeds from any book sales during this morning to the "Well Child" Charity. www.wellchild.org.uk. Thank you in anticipation of your support.
